Renovation of an appartment in a historic building
Bologna, Italy

2021

In breve

From a cramped attic to a refined apartment just a few steps from Piazza Maggiore: this is the conversion project we completed on the top two floors of a building in the historic center of Bologna.

The main challenge was to bring light into a home that was originally particularly dark. The creation of a double-height space, together with the expansion of the floor area, made it possible to enhance the sense of openness, allowing natural light to filter through the roof skylights and pass through the glass partitions that define the mezzanine.

A central partition wall separates while at the same time connecting the spacious and welcoming living area with the dining room.

Designed as an independent and separate space, the kitchen connects to the dining room through an opening that allows easy use of and interaction between the two adjacent areas. A large glazed sliding door by Henry Glass opens the kitchen onto the circulation area leading to the staircase.

The custom-made staircase was conceived as a sculptural element, featuring suspended steps with simple, clean lines. To enhance the feeling of lightness and transparency throughout the interior, glass balustrades were created in continuity with the glazing enclosing the mezzanine.

The upper level accommodates the most intimate part of the home, characterized by a true relaxation area where an elegant freestanding bathtub in Cristalplant® by Antonio Lupi Design dominates the space and sits beside a large glazed opening overlooking the rooftops of Bologna’s historic center and the upper section of Basilica di San Petronio. Completing this area dedicated to comfort and wellbeing, a shower was created in the space overlooking the staircase.

To create a warmer atmosphere, a custom-designed fireplace was integrated into a plasterboard wall.

From the small slot terrace, accessible through a glazed French door beside the bathtub, it is possible to enjoy the view while comfortably seated in the outdoor lounge area we designed.

The lighting design, particularly important in this home, was entrusted to PS Lab, which developed a dedicated lighting scheme for each room. To complete the project, decorative lighting fixtures were selected for specific spaces, adding character and enhancing the overall atmosphere.
