Stortorget, the rectangular main square of Katrineholm has a missing side open towards the railway station, so a competition was launched to gather proposals to fill this gap with a new commercial and residential building. MIRO’s project aims to harmonically integrate in the downtown urban morphology an authentically contemporary architectural object. The massing has been therefore obtained by extracting four cross sections from existing twentieth century buildings with the typical pitched roof selected in the surrounding and extruding them as pure volumes. The regular structural cage evolved the mass into a modular shelf generating the commercial porch on the first two floors and a terrace system for the upper storeys apartments on the square side, while on the back the bas-relief effect shrunk into smaller openings caused by the north facing and the noisy presence of the railroad. The apartments have a very strong relationship with their external loggias: a seamless floor treatment and fully collapsable glazed doors do so that in the short but enjoyable Swedish summer the border between inside and outside can completely disappear allowing the tenants to expand their daily domestic lives in the open air.Stortorget, la rettangolare piazza centrale di Katrineholm ha un lato mancante verso la stazione. In ragione di ciò venne lanciato un concorso per raccogliere proposte circa un nuovo edificio commerciale e residenziale che colmasse tale lacuna. Il progetto di MIRO ambisce ad integrare armonicamente nella morfologia urbana del centro un oggetto architettonico autenticamente contemporaneo. La volumetria è stata ottenuta estraendo quattro sezioni trasversali di altrettanti edifici con tetto a falde del ventesimo secolo scelti dal contesto, estrudendole come masse pure. La maglia strutturale regolare ha poi tramutato la massa in una scaffalatura modulare che genera il portico commerciale nei primi due livelli e il sistema di terrazze dei piani residenziali soprastanti sul lato della piazza, mentre sul retro l’effetto a basso rilievo si contrae a generare aperture più piccole, in ragione dell’orientamento a nord e della presenza disturbante della ferrovia. Gli appartamenti hanno un rapporto molto forte con le loro logge esterne: un trattamento omogeneo della pavimentazione e le grandi porte finestre completamente collassabili fanno sì che nella corta ma soave estate svedese il confine fra interno ed esterno possa essere totalmente smaterializzato, permettendo agli occupanti di vivere la loro vita domestica diurna all’aria aperta.
