Kortepohja is the university neighbourhood of Jyväskylä characterised by an even functionalist architecture. A competition was launched to design a vast dorm complex in place of obsolete structures distributed on two lots linked only on a corner. Aim of our design was to respect the “whitish-modernist” allure of the surrounding built environment while offering a warmer and more informal interpretation of the urban habitat. The massing contradicts therefore the orthogonal geometry of the neighbourhood with an enveloping movement that generates a seamless flow of interstitial spaces protected by the masses. The buildings, rather conventional in plan with their double loaded corridors, reveal their uniqueness in section and elevation. The articulated shelving façade gives birth to a rather varied serie of combination of windows and balconies, all slightly different, so that each room has its own identity, preventing the risk of the honeycomb effect typical of this kind of structures. In the southern lot are also located the accessory functions of the complex: a supermarket and restaurant and automatic car silos housing all the requested parking stalls.Kortepohja è il quartiere universitario di Jyväskylä caratterizzato da un’omogenea architettura razionalista. Il concorso venne indetto per la progettazione di un grande dormitorio in luogo di alcune strutture obsolete distribuite su due lotti congiunti da un angolo. Lo scopo del nostro concetto progettuale era di rispettare l’atmosfera da “moderno bianco” dell’intorno offrendo però una più calda e informale interpretazione di habitat urbano. La volumetria contraddice quindi la geometria ortogonale del quartiere con un movimento avvolgente che genera un flusso continuo di spazi interstiziali protetti dalle masse costruite. Gli edifici, in pianta piuttosto convenzionali con i loro corridoi a doppio affaccio, dimostrano la loro peculiarità in sezione e alzato. L’articolata facciata a scaffalatura da origine a una serie piuttosto varia di combinazioni di finestre e balconi, tutte leggermente differenti, cosicché ogni stanza ha la sua propria identità, scongiurando il rischio di “effetto alveare” tipico di questo genere di strutture. Nel lotto meridionale sono poi situati i servizi accessori del complesso: un supermercato-ristorante e dei silo automatici che stoccano tutti i posti auto richiesti.
